Recipe #7 - Spicy Korean Chicken (Yangnyeom-tongdak)

Disclaimer:

I didn't have the ingredients to make a proper crispy fried chicken. You can look for a proper recipe to make crispy friend chicken and just follow the sauce part here.

Ingredients that I used:

  • Chicken Breast. Sliced into bite-size cubes
  • 3 Cloves of Garlic minced
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Flour
  • Eggs
  • Paprika
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Chili Powder
  • 4 Tbsp. White Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. Soy Sauce
  • 5 Tbsp. Ketchup
  • 1 Tbsp. Chili Flakes
  • 1 Tbsp. Korean Chili Paste (Gochujang)
  • 4 Tbsp. Korean Starch/Corn Syrup (Mul-yeot)
  • 2 more cloves of Garlic minced

Procedure - Fried Chicken

1 Put the following ingredients with your cubed chicken. Salt, Pepper, 3 Cloves of Garlic.

2 Mix them together and let them marinate for 30minutes to 1 hour

3 While waiting, you can prepare your chicken breading mix. Add the following to your Flour: Salt, Pepper, Paprika, Cayenne Pepper, Chili Powder. I did not put an exact measurement. This really depends on how much of each spice you want. Mix them all together
4 30minutes to 1 hour later, it's time to coat your chicken. Break the eggs and scramble them. Dip your chicken into the egg then into your breading mix. Shake of the excess breading.
5. Heat your oil. And as soon as it's hot enough, you can start cooking your chicken (medium-high heat). Make sure there's enough space between the pieces and do not overcrowd your pot. You can do this by batch.
6. For extra crunch, after you fry all of them. Turn the heat into high. and do a second fry for your chicken. Careful not to fry them for too long.
7. Done! Time to make your sauce!

Procedure - Spicy Korean Sauce
1. Mix together the following ingredients. I listed them in the order that I added them.
  • 1 Tbsp. Korean Chili Paste (Gochujang)
  • 5 Tbsp. Ketchup
  • 2 Tbsp. Soy Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp. Chili Flakes
  • 4 Tbsp. White Sugar
  • 2 more cloves of Garlic minced
  • 4 Tbsp. Korean Starch/Corn Syrup (Mul-yeot)
2. Heat an empty saucepan with medium-low heat. Once hot, put the spicy Korean sauce and wait for it to boil.
3. Then start placing your friend chicken!
4. Give it a good mix. Make sure all your chicken is coated with your sauce.
5. Done! Transfer to a serving place and you're all set!
